Thomas Tuchel Wants Bellingham's Fire Provided The Three Lions' Ace Sets Aside Egotism Outside.
One snub was enough. Another and it would have started to look vindictive from the England manager, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to realize that securing World Cup glory will likely need contributions by Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally on the midfielder to fit into the game plans and squad hierarchies necessary with the national team now that he is back in Tuchel's supportive environment.
Tuchel seeks Bellingham's edge, his passion, but it is about using it constructively. Individual quality matters but England know from bitter experience that there is a cost when stardom prevails. Nevertheless, a message has been sent.
Bellingham had much to ponder after not being selected of the previous squad. He watched England book their place at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He saw Morgan Rogers shine as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as the coach talk about appreciating the group’s energy and principles. Inevitably, he has reacted in champion style, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid versus Barcelona and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; leaving him out again would have made his squad place in serious doubt.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a midfielder directed towards pressuring the opposition rather than his own colleagues. Ultimately, in purely sporting terms, there is no value to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has demonstrated that representing the national team is a valuable, uncertain thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now offer support for the youngster after demonstrating that he is willing to make big calls.
“No issue exists with him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel said. “Jude possesses that aggression. It takes that kind of fire to succeed at the top that he reached. We all need to help him and build a setting where he can channel that intensity towards opponents and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”
The star took up much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s final group games against one opponent and the other. Who else? Indeed, how about another talent? Here is another prodigious playmaker requiring coaching. He has not played for the national team since spring and has found it hard to perform well this year but the boss could not ignore the 25-year-old after his display in his club's victory against Borussia Dortmund this week.
The issue, however, is how to use the attacking talents at available. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be a strong case to pick another youngster once he recovers from a fitness issue. Would taking five No 10s to the tournament be too many? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the team, restricting the captain's style in the process.
It seems unlikely the current manager doing similar if it disrupts the team harmony. Space exists for one No 10, with fast wide players on the wings. Clarity helps. Bellingham is in as a central attacker. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be through the middle. Tuchel wants him close to the striker. “It is illogical to tell Foden: ‘You are needed in the team but there’s no space on your best position, can you play the left side? Can you play other flank?’” he stated. “Phil will play in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I've long had this fantasy about him for a long time. I think it matches his abilities the most.”
Tuchel agreed there are times when Foden has appeared uncomfortable in an national jersey. “You feel almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has obvious passion to play football, then obviously an issue exists, whether it's the position, the setup, it's unclear.
“In my opinion he is also accustomed to playing for Man City in a particular setup, to have a clear task. Believe he profits greatly from clear instructions. What is my position? In which positions am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?
Tuchel mentioned one star bursting through for easy finishes and the other scoring goals from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. A new face is rewarded for his good displays for City at left-back. Intrigue is high.
Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Interestingly, he hinted at deploying the playmaker as a false 9 against one opponent or the other. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and the winger are alternatives if Kane be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for trying new things.
At the same time, it is additionally a moment to foster the understanding with his teammate going. It's surprising that one must look back to Bellingham setting up the captain to net in a friendly win against the Scots in over a year ago to discover the one and only time in many appearances for England when the pair combined for a score. Tuchel will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other once during England’s draws with one opponent and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.
“This is where eventually it falls to the responsibility of the players,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. There is still a feeling of Bellingham under scrutiny. He cannot even be guaranteed to start versus Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants Bellingham committed but he will be observing him closely. Set aside the ego at the door. It will make a powerful England team into an more effective one.
